THE LAST PIG is a lyrical meditation on what it means to be a sentient creature with the power to kill. Deeply immersive, the film follows a farmer through his final year of slaughtering pigs. The clear sentience of the pigs and their bucolic life on the farm is ruptured by weekly trips to the slaughterhouse. Through sparse, intimate musings, the farmer reveals his growing conflict - and ultimately his inability to continue a life spent “peddling in death.”
Set against the stunning backdrop of upstate New York, this deeply immersive film is a poetic snapshot, a contemplation on the value of life. The film does not instruct the audience in what to believe. It quietly places the question in front of us, as though we too are farmers who must decide every day whether to haul our pigs to slaughter.
