Immutable Uncertainties

Description

Our memories are what make us who we are in every moment, they shape our decisions, our relationships, our triumphs, and our heartbreaks. You make one change to a memory – forget a detail, forget a person, forget a place, or lose it to Alzheimer’s – and the very essence of you changes.

Originally inspired by an article about regenerative abilities in flatworms and the article’s speculation that this research could eventually be used to heal both the bodies and memories of humans, this film explores the relationship between the present and memory. The story, which originated as a short play, complicates the early years of a romantic relationship with a daughter's quest to preserve her mom’s deteriorating memory.

The film’s reverse chronology mirrors Kirsten's mother’s progression with Alzheimer’s disease. As Kirsten gains back clarity of the happy memories she has with her Mom through a home video from her childhood, we also know the pain she is soon to face. We see the joy Kirsten has in simply being remembered, and the grief she experiences in being forgotten.

Based on the short play “The Undiscovered Dimensions and Immutable Certainties of Worms” by Callan Stout. Adapted for the screen by Callan Stout, Lucy Blumenfield, & Arielle Friedman. (13 mins)
