CATFISH (2010)

Description

Before the word “catfishing” entered the cultural lexicon, before the true-crime doc boom took over streaming platforms — there was Catfish. This viral documentary mystery follows New York photographer Nev Schulman as he begins an online friendship with a young artist named Abby, which evolves into a digital romance with her older sister Megan. But as inconsistencies start to surface, Nev and his friends set out on a road trip to uncover the truth.

Catfish is as gripping now as it was in 2010, offering a deeply personal (and often uncomfortable) glimpse into identity, deception, and our growing digital lives.

LESFF proudly revisits Catfish 15 years later, having first screened it during our inaugural festival in a tiny pop-up theater on Norfolk Street. We’re thrilled to bring it back to the Lower East Side — where it all began — to reflect on the film’s enduring legacy and its role in launching a genre-defining wave of true-crime storytelling.
