LINE DESCRIBING A CONE (1973)

RETROSPECTIVE / 30 mins

GENRE: AVANT-GARDE, INTERACTIVE

Description

A landmark of experimental cinema and installation art, Line Describing a Cone transforms a simple projection into a sculptural event. In a darkened room, a thin line of light slowly traces a circle on the wall, forming a luminous, three-dimensional cone that exists as both film and object. Activated by haze and the movement of viewers, the beam becomes something you can step into, cut through, and experience from within. First created in New York’s downtown art scene of the early 1970s, McCall’s “solid light film” collapses the boundary between screen and space, turning cinema into a live, participatory encounter with time, light, and perception.
